Queens Drive Relief road site is designed to offer back up charging for buses if the council’s main charging hub is affected by high water levels from the nearby river Trent. In total five BYD bus chargers and five Optare bus chargers are installed in purpose-built enclosures along the site.
The project involved excavation of 118ms of trench works in the grass verge from the low voltage plant room to each charger location, the installation of over a kilometre of cabling, switch room alterations and fabrication of metal enclosures. The underground services – fibre optic, 33,000 volt and existing cabling to street lighting – meant large sections of excavation were carried out by hand. With the main road and relief road being open whilst works were on-going, health and safety, traffic management and deliveries had to be planned in great detail. Poor weather and snow delayed the ground works by three days with all works being completed in just under three weeks.
